White isn't just white. I love the challenge of painting white and the search for the subtle colors that hide so well. For me, it's like being on a treasure hunt and having that "ah-ha!" moment of discovery when I find the soft colors hidden within.

Looking closely at this painting you will find the 'critters'; a hummingbird, ladybug, butterfly, and snail who I fondly refer to as Harvey. Harvey was a bit slow in his arrival at the feast. Being fashionably late isn't always popular.

Love, love, love how this one turned out! This painting was years in the planning stages. Planning of the composition, the subject matter, do I include Pandora or not? How to depict the evils of the world? How to depict 'Hope'? In the end, I decided Pandora was overdone and in other paintings I found, Pandora always seemed to be depicted as an overly sexy sex object and a bit on the 'witchy' side. So, I decided to save Pandora the humiliation and let her take a rest from this rendition by painting only the 'box'. All the other elements fell into place after I found the perfect vessel. The apple is representative of Eve, another woman blamed for the woes of the world. But, that will be another story in another painting.

Here's a bit of what I call 'useless information that stuck in my brain for no apparent reason'. It really was NOT a box but a bowl. I guess they didn't do the box thing way back then. There was a misinterpretation of the word bowl to box in the 15th century and it has stuck for the last 500 years.

She has released the fear of death and stands her truth. She knows the meaning and purpose of her life here and understands the suffering of humanity, she has an awareness and the ability to stay balanced and centered amid the storms of life. She is Love, Gratitude, Light, Compassion, Healer, Teacher and sees the Divine in every single one of us. She has awakened and shares her Inner Freedom with those who are waiting and anticipating their awareness.

In 2014 I lost my little sister to breast cancer and my son was killed 6 months later. This painting honors the people I lost. The monk figurine represents me and the two monks in the mirror represent my son and my sister. I am on this side and they have transitioned to the other side yet we will always remain connected as shown by the thin white ribbon. The white butterflies on the other side(in the mirror) are indicative of angels (for me). The nautilus indicates my mental state at the time, trapped, alone, yet protected by the outer walls I had erected while I dealt with grief.

Raising my grandson from the age of 6 years old, I watched him struggle with severe bi-polar his entire life. He is now 28 and the bipolar is somewhat under control. But, at the time, I wasn't quite sure about bi-polar or how to help someone through the nightmare as such as his. I think I did this painting as my way of trying to understand what he goes through. From being highly manic and violent to being down, depressed and anxious that nobody liked him. Rarely were things 'peachy' for him or the family. The peach representing the middle ground or what we would call 'normal' was rarely present. It seemed he was always morphing from one mood to the other throughout the day. The peppers represent his manic stages and the mushrooms, the depressive stage. Until someone pointed it out to me I didn't realize that out of the vine I had created his profile, at the top, and hands and legs (and a tail?)on the middle and lower levels. Talk about inadvertently painting ones' sub-conscience!

I like it when I manage to pique someones' interest in a painting, to keep them standing in front of it, thinking, cogitating on its meaning, wondering "What the heck was this artist thinking?" I don't try to make it my goal. I'm simply painting my life journey. Painting is a state of being and self-discovery. A painter paints what she is.

This painting was inspired by one of my students whom I taught for 5 years. At 13 years old, she announced to me she was gay. A year or so later she announced she was bi-sexual, then transgender/transsexual, then simply said, "it's complicated". She kept this information from her family for at least 5 years. Her teenaged angst was multiplied ten-fold while she struggled with her identity, hiding who she really was. Towards the end of our time spent together teaching and learning, she finally came out to her mother. There was an overnight change in her personality. She was relieved, happy, elated, , light as a feather, sunshiny and danced on-air to name a few emotions. I thought of her as a butterfly emerging from her cocoon and was free to fly like the beautiful person she was.
She graduated high school and left for college. I miss seeing her weekly for our 2 hours of making art and talking and trying to solve the woes of the world. She's an extremely intelligent person who I know is out there somewhere taking on the world by storm.

Before this painting sold, it traveled around to a couple of galleries and museums and was favorably written about in 'American Arts Quarterly'

The "inner pear" shows an attempt to discard the dark cloak of constant depression (the outer layer) which serves as an armor and a disguise to fool, not only others, but myself as well. The inner pear tries to emerge completely out, to be what she once was, but continues holding on to her protective tough skin not quite ready to bravely step out and be happy without feeling guilt.

A wilted and almost dried up daffodil (scientific name narcissus) gazes into a tri-folding mirror and sees only himself as beautiful and all else (the purple tulip) surrounding him as not as perfect, beautiful or as delightful as he sees himself to be. When in reality, it is he who is ugly on the inside and outside because of his conceit. The dragonfly represents self delusion and the bubbles allude to the brevity of life.

"Country Houses, Burgundy, France" by Karla Nolan, framed pastel painting, sale, affordable

I am going through some older artworks and putting them on sale occasionally, as I need more wall space in my small art studio so, hopefully, you will benefit from my decluttering mode!  My husband and I have visited Burgundy, the wine region in France, a couple of times and I have always marveled at the architecture of the country houses, the flowers and natural landscaping surrounding the red tiled roofed abodes.  This pastel painting is framed as shown and takes me back to some more of my travel memories.  Does it look familiar to you?
