“Forever Changed”, by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

Forever Changed

Sometimes people come into our lives unexpectedly.  They end up doing life with us, the good and the bad.  They see us through the most trying times and the offer us unwavering friendship and love.  They are “our person”.  Sometimes, they are gone way too soon.  But because of them, we are forever changed.  This piece has layers of papers, paints, inks, and is heavily textured.

This piece is sold, but commissions are welcomed.  Feel free to contact me via email at saltlightwatercolors@yahoo.com.  You can also follow me on Facebook and Instagram.

Allegorical, Realism, Surrealism Still-Life Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

Lilies with Critters 18" x 24" Oil on Canvas

White isn't just white. I love the challenge of painting white and the search for the subtle colors that hide so well. For me, it's like being on a treasure hunt and having that "ah-ha!" moment of discovery when I find the soft colors hidden within.
Looking closely at this painting you will find the 'critters'; a hummingbird, ladybug, butterfly, and snail who I fondly refer to as Harvey. Harvey was a bit slow in his arrival at the feast. Being fashionably late isn't always popular.

May all that is happy be known to your heart.

Love and Light to you and yours,

Paula

'Unbound', 16"x 20", Oil on Canvas, Contemporary Realism Still Life Oil Paintings by Paula Peacock

'Unbound'
by Paula Peacock
16" x 20"
Oil on Canvas

A breath of fresh air! After almost 3 years of my life being consumed and controlled by grief, being prescribed 3 anti-depressants and another drug to control the panic attacks, I have moments of feeling like Paula again. Those moments are stretching out a little longer each day. I’m still grieving and realize I always will. I still have ‘downer days’ but am able to crawl out with a lot of effort.
I’ve also, realize that I’ve been grieving Paula. I missed me being me, being happy, being able to handle whatever life dished out with an attitude of “No sense in worrying about what you can’t change, deal with it and move on”. I couldn’t deal with this one. I blame this faceless, nameless man of not only taking my sons’ life but of taking the lives of me and my daughter. I miss my son, my daughter and myself. What we were is gone. What we will be is yet to come. But, we will be.
I don’t know what happened to make life bearable again. But, I started noticing a difference after completing this painting. The sky is a bit brighter as the sun rises, symbolic of a new day, with the heavyweight of darkness being pushed aside. A beautiful blue butterfly releases the restraints of grief and anger, allowing me the ability to breathe again and to look forward to what the day may bring.
Art was my therapy. Some paintings take on a life of their own and this is one of those. It’s as though this was my last session with the therapist and I graduated. The lock is opened and the suffocating armor is falling away. After all, one can’t wear it forever. It gets rusty. Without realizing it, each sit down at the easel was another therapy session lasting almost 3 years
Art saved me. Art kept me moving forward. It became my purpose. I wish everyone had art. If anything comes of this I would hope that someday, someone will be able to relate to these paintings and sculptures in a much-needed way and be nudged toward healing their broken heart.
Live each day as though it’s all we have and remember to tell your children you love them no matter their age. They will never outgrow hearing it and we should never tire of saying it.

"Lilies with Critters' Contemporary Realism Still Life by Paula Peacock

'Lilies with Critters'
by Paula Peacock
24 in. X 30 in.
Oil on Canvas

This painting signifies an awakening for me. After the killing of my son, I went into a major depression and found myself creating dark paintings. I realize now I was creating a visual journal of depression and grief. Thirteen paintings & six sculptures later the heaviness left me and this painting is indicative of me waking up, coming out of my cocoon. It represents an active Springtime when insects and birds become busy with an air of excitement, renewal, and growth. You will find a snail, a ladybug, a butterfly and a hummingbird. Art really is therapeutic and I would be the first to say, it saved my life.

'Coming Out', Contemporary Still-Life by Paula peacock

'Coming Out'
by Paula Peacock
11"x14"
Oil on Canvas

This painting was inspired by one of my students whom I taught for 5 years. At 13 years old, she announced to me she was gay. A year or so later she announced she was bi-sexual, then transgender/transsexual, then simply said, "it's complicated". She kept this information from her family for at least 5 years. Her teenaged angst was multiplied ten-fold while she struggled with her identity, hiding who she really was. Towards the end of our time spent together teaching and learning, she finally came out to her mother. There was an overnight change in her personality. She was relieved, happy, elated, , light as a feather, sunshiny and danced on-air to name a few emotions. I thought of her as a butterfly emerging from her cocoon and was free to fly like the beautiful person she was.
She graduated high school and left for college. I miss seeing her weekly for our 2 hours of making art and talking and trying to solve the woes of the world. She's an extremely intelligent person who I know is out there somewhere taking on the world by storm.

Before this painting sold, it traveled around to a couple of galleries and museums and was favorably written about in 'American Arts Quarterly'

Oil Painting Tip

Sometimes if you make a mistake in color, try neutralizing it with its complement on the color wheel.

“Fly”, Original Mixed Media Artwork by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

 "Fly"

"Flying" and being brave seems to be my "theme" for the year.  This whole new adventure, painting in mixed media, has been born out of a tragedy.  It has evolved out of trying to heal and explore what works for me in the healing process.

In this new journey, I have been trying to push myself and my art.  I've been finding my voice, for the first time, through my art and what it says.  I seem to be connecting to people through my art...and no words seem to be necessary.  All of the emotions in my heart and soul spill out on to the canvas.

This piece has several layers in it.  I used stencils at the very beginning and then began layering torn and painted pieces of paper over the stenciled areas.  I used a stencil and molding paste to add more texture.  I then added a photo transfer of the butterfly and painted over her body and wings.  In this piece I wanted to convey the feeling that the butterfly is flying towards the light, which is how I was feeling.  I also added a glass door pull in the middle of the piece - just because I loved it and it felt like the piece needed it.

I have always been extremely shy and I'm not very good with words, so this is an amazing way for me to be able to say what I'm not able to.  It is scary, "putting it out there" for people to see.  I wonder if people will get it, or relate to it, or judge it.  But, this is the year to be brave and just do it.  So, I will continue in this journey.  I will try to be "Fearless" and "Fly".

"Fly"

12 X 12 X 1.5  Mixed Media on Cradle Board.  It is heavily textured with layers and layers of paint, paper, and molding paste.  The middle of the piece is embellished with a glass door pull.  It is finished with a Resin Coating ~ No need to frame, unless you would like to do so.

$140
