Okay, I'm jumping the gun on spring, I admit it.  In fact, it is snowing again as I type, heading into April.  The green foliage has emerged from the ground but the iris buds are not ready to peek out yet.  I'm more than ready to see this iris plant once more.  Enough with the snow!

I don't know if you've noticed but SPRING IS HERE!  Hooray!  That means iris and I really like iris.  So does my husband, we have them planted all over the garden.  This is my second oil pastel painting and I'm pleased with how it turned out, although there is so much to learn in this medium.  Whew!  Art means never stop learning..............that doesn't sound right, but you get the idea, right?

Ah, Italy, hill towns, Tuscany, and Spring!  Fields full of red poppies, unbelievably vibrant.  The curvy and steep roads leading into the town of Cortona.  The old buildings, rugged stones from years ago.  Just have to love this place!

"Santa Fe Spring" by Karla Nolan, unframed palette knife oil painting

 Well, this painting took an eternity to paint to my satisfaction.  I wondered if the process would ever end!  Canyon Road is the most famous art gallery road in Santa Fe and there was a gallery behind this fabulous blooming decorate crabtree.  Years ago I painted it in pastel and finally succumbed to the urge to paint it in oils with primarily palette knives and an occasional brushstroke.  This has been sitting in my head, tempting me forever, and finally, here it is ready for framing and a wall.  Whew!

Yes, here are more poppies, but these are painted directly onto the glass and the framing technique I use gives them dimensional aspects not usually seen in paintings on canvas.  These actually look three dimensional from some angles.  Always playing around with the glass paints and having a blast doing so!

I haven't painted in almost three weeks now, due to a nasty fall down some wooden stairs.  I still have a very swollen jammed finger on my right hand and it's slowed me down mightily, even in typing.  So no blogs, either.  I've been getting restless, so thought this painting would fill in the gap for now.  Hope you enjoy the view!

Finally!  It has been forever since I have blogged, due to neck and arm problems, along with failing computer issues.  So, back to it, already!  These are my sweet shooting stars that will bloom shortly in our back yard.  I first saw these magnificent wildflowers hiking in the foothills and mountains many years ago and at that time I had no idea that you could purchase them at a nursery or garden store.  Well, I'm glad I discovered this, as they will cheer up any day here in northern Colorado.  Happy Spring!

"Impromptu Ballerina Rose Bouquet" by Karla Nolan, unframed 14"x11" palette knife oil painting

I studied oil painting with Daniel Edmondson some time ago, a marvelous teacher and fine person.  He paints the most beautiful still life paintings, something I never felt I could even approach with a brush or palette knife.  I was inspired, however, more than I knew, to attempt a more "rugged" or less refined painting recently, with the thought of the pink ballerina rose bush planted in front of our house as the subject matter.  Dan has a more representational approach and I just tend to abstract my realism, as you can see!  (I might add here, he teaches some amazing painting classes via DVDs, you might want to check into these....he's on Facebook with more information....)

The power of Mother Nature is enormous.  Looking above to the skies, there are multiple layers of energy and color, simultaneously beckoning to our eyes -- just take a look, realize how huge the skies are, the atmosphere above, the earth below.  Sky paintings are easily among my favorites to paint.  As a friend of mine from Virginia says:  "Pow! Zap! Kaboom!"  I say hooray for the elements...they are a blast to work with!

Well, it's been a while since I've blogged and posted my artwork.  I needed to take a brief hiatus to attend to some family matters but I'm hoping to be posting more regularly again. 

Can you guess what season I'd prefer to be in right now?  Hint, it's not winter!  Our forecast 1" snowfall turned out to be a half foot deep where we live.  So my mind returns to Tuscany, Italy, in the springtime where the fields are red with papaveri, the red European flowers in bloom everywhere.  This art piece comes framed up in a clean and simple gold frame, ready to go on your wall.
