Okay,
I'll be up front. I do not plan to sell this painting. It was
extremely time consuming to paint, full of detail, which is not my usual
modus operandus. I went to the Northern Colorado Pow Wow a couple of
weeks ago with my husband and then with my young granddaughter. I love a
pow wow. The color, the spirit, the dancing, the drumming, nothing is
quite like it. So I attempted to capture a second of the fancy dance, I
was diligent in my effort, and I am so happy with it! Yaay!

"Viewing Vernazza From the Cinque Terre Trail" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting
Hiking along the Cinque Terre trail in Italy was quite the adventure, especially since I had not anticipated this activity and did not bring the proper footwear. I'm not much of a hiker but I do enjoy a good view. I surely got one from here!

"Crimson Fields" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting
After a small hiatus, I am back. Life can get pretty busy sometimes, but I have a bright outlook! This painting is just a sentimental remembrance of the endless poppy fields which I love so much, what, a trip down memory lane in the fields of Italy or France in the springtime!

"Quartet" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting on paper
I
feel that you can see the past, present and future in this poppy
painting. Fitting for the season, eh? The seeds have formed from the
flower having bloomed, ready to throw to the next generation. The poppies are in various stages of bloom and there are a couple of buds just ready to burst open! Ah, Mama Nature strikes again!

"Poppy Field Near Trevi, Italy" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting on paper
From the moon to the poppy fields again (my last blog was a lunar blog) -- we were near this field but above it when we first saw it, standing near a wall in Trevi, Italy. Visiting in May, the delightful red flowers were everywhere and we drove all around so I could get some reference photos. Luckily we were successful in navigating to this field, so here you go, some more poppies from me to you!

"Poppies at Paestum (Italy)" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor and ink painting
Located in the southern part of Italy are ancient Greek ruins and, what else, poppies growing near them! They are a marvelous site to see, the combination of blue skies, cypress, the actual Greek ruins surrounded by field stone walls, and the bright red poppies, seemingly unfazed by history long gone by. Visit this extraordinary site if you can, you won't regret it.

"Poppies for D" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting on paper
Yes, more poppies! Experimental for me, as watercolor always is and will be (hard to control
the water part of it!), I started this painting in Rome and finished it
in Fort Collins, having a great time in the meantime! More coming, as I
really do enjoy playing with the colors and the ink outlines.

"Papaveri Trio" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting
Yup,
still at it with the watercolor and ink paintings. My neck hates me,
though. I am more accustomed to standing, hopefully straight, and
painting with a palette knife on canvas. I just have been enjoying this
media, remembering my dad's passion for painting with watercolor and
ink, not the same subject matter, but the memories are great. And you
know me, I can't get enough of bright red poppies!

"Italy: Cypress and Poppies" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting
Fond memories of Italy again, irresistible! I cannot speak the Italian language except for basic phrases (grazie, prego, bellissima) and, while I can remember an occasional phrase for a short while, I have all but given up learning this Latin based lingo. However, my friend Patrizia is encouraging me to learn a bit more and I'm enjoying a book or two written by Tim Parks (an English gentleman who has lived and worked in Italy for 30 years) in which I can pick up a phrase here and there. The moral of this story: (1) never give up on learning something new and (2) visit Italy, for goodness sakes, do you know what you are missing?

"Roman Holiday Poppies" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting
There's
no better time than the present, or so I thought while staying recently
in Italy. I picked up those watercolors and ink pens, put my mind to
it, and produced these poppies. Quite a switch from my recent lunar
mindset, eh? What fun I had!

"Santa Fe Doors: Yellow Door in Wooded Area" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor painting
A
brief return to my matted, watercolor Santa Fe doors series. I thought
that a yellow door might cheer me up with all of this wretched rainy
weather here in Colorado. Adobe and yellow wood, with woods behind. A
bit mysterious, don't you think? Especially in Santa Fe with all of the
red and turquoise around. Out of the ordinary.

"Santa Fe Doors: Arch Over Blue", matted watercolor and ink painting by Karla Nolan
Another
in my Santa Fe doors series. Painting these doors have had me wanting
to visit this charming city once again but with the early winter snows, I
think I'll wait until it warms up a bit! I believe that Santa Fe's
altitude is even higher than ours is in Fort Collins! It can get
bitterly cold even though it's about seven hours south of us! Go
figure...

"Santa Fe Doors: The Bell", matted original watercolor and ink painting by Karla Nolan
My
husband and I are on vacation in California and I am behind in my art
blog posts, so here goes, another taste of Santa Fe, doors, adobe and
such. As I recall, the skies were quite blue the day I saw this door,
it was a hot and dry day but knowing the way adobe walls are built, good
insulation, I knew it would be nice and cool inside the rooms of this
building...and it was.. This was actually an outside courtside wall, a
small patio was located behind it, then the room in which we stayed. I
don't know the significance of the bell, it was just there, but the
whole scene was charming, which is what I remember best about Santa Fe:
the charm and ambience of the city.

"Santa Fe Doors: Old Wood, Painted Adobe" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting matted to 8"x10"
Another
in the series of the Santa Fe doors. This is the land of enchantment,
so they say, and I am in agreement. I have no idea who painted the
adobe wall, it's not really a door, but it is enchanting as is the heavy
old wooden door to the left. It seemed to take forever to paint this
small piece, trying to get it right but no too right! If it's "too
right", why it's a photograph and that wasn't my goal, I'd rather you
get the gist of the atmosphere in sweet Santa Fe!

"Santa Fe Door: Cobalt" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting, matted to 8"x10"
Santa
Fe, New Mexico, is an extraordinary town. It is so old, one of the
very first towns in North America, long before it became the United
States. Most living structures are adobe and Canyon Road is probably
the most famous road due to the large amount of art galleries located on
it. Some of the houses have amazing doors so I decided to devote some
watercolor and ink time to them. Here is my first door -- a bright
blue cobalt wooden arch of a door. I've painted five more so far, so
get ready for an occasional post to entice you to visit wondrous Santa
Fe.
