Still Life, Flower, Water "Surprise at the Stock Tank" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

Hawk, Bird Painting, Wildlife Art "High and Dry" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West Out back of our house is an old corral, windmill, and stock tank. Our land is no longer a working ranch, so our stock tank is for our enjoyment and the pleasure of passing deer, coyotes, bobcat, and birds, birds, birds. We’ve even constructed ways for small animals to climb up to take a drink, climb down, or climb out of the tank if they fall into it. It’s really a wonderful piece of our lives. Every once in a while we put some water plants into the tank to see what will happen. This painting depicts one of those times when the water lilies bloomed. Against the green water and with the reflection of the windmill, I thought it was a spectacular thing of beauty!

"Solo Act: Red Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

You may have noticed that I love the color red, the energy, the vibrancy, the fire.  And so on.  I painted this Indian Paintbrush a few years back and was recently contacted by some folks in California interested in purchasing it.  I enthusiastically agreed, of course!  It is going to a good home and I am so happy!

"My Iris" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Okay, I'm jumping the gun on spring, I admit it.  In fact, it is snowing again as I type, heading into April.  The green foliage has emerged from the ground but the iris buds are not ready to peek out yet.  I'm more than ready to see this iris plant once more.  Enough with the snow!

"My Iris, 7"x5" palette knife oil painting on canvas panel, $45 includes s/h in continental U.S., Paypal accepted, contact me for more information at KarlaNolan@gmail.com

"Carmine Hills" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor painting on paper

You know, sometimes simpler just seems to be better and in the case of this watercolor painting, it seems to work!  Almost pure color, although at a close up view you'll see different hues and shades of reds.  Ah, I just love color!

"Vermilion Hills" by Karla Nolan, watercolor on paper

This painting is something of a compilation of the many poppy fields I've seen in both Italy and France.  Lots of red, wouldn't you say?  How can these beautiful flowers not make one smile?  I love seeing them!

"Near Najac, France" by Karla Nolan, watercolor painting (unmatted)

It was May of 2013, a very difficult time in life as my father had passed away.  We escaped to France.  May is poppy month and we were fortunate enough to be able to view the many coquelicot fields around this little village, Najac.  Seeing these happy hills of red soothed my shattered nerves a bit.  Looking back, I recall the emotions of losing a beloved person, those feelings never leave.  But France helped.

"Papaveri Trio" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

Yup, still at it with the watercolor and ink paintings.  My neck hates me, though.  I am more accustomed to standing, hopefully straight, and painting with a palette knife on canvas.  I just have been enjoying this media, remembering my dad's passion for painting with watercolor and ink, not the same subject matter, but the memories are great.  And you know me, I can't get enough of bright red poppies!

"Italy: Cypress and Poppies" by Karla Nolan, watercolor and ink painting

Fond memories of Italy again, irresistible!  I cannot speak the Italian language except for basic phrases (grazie, prego, bellissima) and, while I can remember an occasional phrase for a short while, I have all but given up learning this Latin based lingo.  However, my friend Patrizia is encouraging me to learn a bit more and I'm enjoying a book or two written by Tim Parks (an English gentleman who has lived and worked in Italy for 30 years) in which I can pick up a phrase here and there.  The moral of this story:  (1) never give up on learning something new and (2) visit Italy, for goodness sakes, do you know what you are missing?

"Roman Holiday Poppies" by Karla Nolan, matted watercolor and ink painting

There's no better time than the present, or so I thought while staying recently in Italy.  I picked up those watercolors and ink pens, put my mind to it, and produced these poppies.  Quite a switch from my recent lunar mindset, eh?  What fun I had!

"Solo" by Karla Nolan, unframed oil pastel painting

I don't know if you've noticed but SPRING IS HERE!  Hooray!  That means iris and I really like iris.  So does my husband, we have them planted all over the garden.  This is my second oil pastel painting and I'm pleased with how it turned out, although there is so much to learn in this medium.  Whew!  Art means never stop learning..............that doesn't sound right, but you get the idea, right?

"Solo", 12"x9" unframed oil pastel painting on sanded paper, write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information

The neighbors across the street have the most magnificent peach irises, I was inspired to paint them onto glass, surround them blue skies and green leaves.  I'm happy with the results, are you?

"Poppy Pounce" by Karla Nolan unframed palette knife oil painting on gallery wrapped canvas

Giving a painting a title can be a tedious event.  I mean, let's face, have I not painted more than a couple of poppy paintings?  I was straining my brain today to give this post a proper name and then I thought of how my cat, as a kitten, used to pounce on everything!  I could just see him pouncing on these poppies (aka papaveri, coquelicot)!  Hence, voila, the name of this painting was born!

"Windswept Indian Paintbrush" by Karla Nolan, framed painting on glass

Oops, at it again, I guess, that painting on glass and all!  This is my take on the famous Indian Paintbrush flowers, a flowering plant indigenous to the western U.S., always a delight to see blooming alongside the road, on hikes, climbing up a mountain....I've seen them recently in Colorado and Wyoming and they occur in varying colors, primarily red but sometimes with an orange hue.

"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan

We live in what I call "a little slice of Paradise", Fort Collins, Colorado.  This sweet town has all sorts of horticultural delights including a huge test garden, Colorado State University Horticultural Department, multitudes of greenhouses and gardens.  But one of my favorite spots to visit is The Gardens on Spring Creek, less than two miles from our house.  This past summer I did a solo tour through the Gardens and found this sweet pink water lily, just floating along.  Here it is for you to ponder.  I enjoyed painting it and learned a few lessons about watercolor painting as the painting progressed.  It is one tough medium!

"Pink Water Lily", original watercolor painting, 4.75"x8", $60 includes s/h in continental U.S., click Paypal button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information
