"Southwest Panorama in Reds" by Karla Nolan, watercolor on paper
There is something about the colors of the cliffs, hills, mesas, and mountains in the Southwest United States that is so intriguing to me. There is no one shade of red involved, instead there are underlying purples, oranges, yellows, browns. Usually there is a bright blue sky with incoming storms fully in view when observing the clouds. I love it here in Colorado and also seeing the view in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.

"Gold in Those Red Hills", original watercolor painting by Karla Nolan
A
little more experimentation on the old watercolor paper! I really
enjoyed painting this one -- "gold in them thar hills" sounds a bit
tacky but -- it just reminded me so much of the southwestern part of the
U.S., part Colorado, Utah, Arizona and so on. You just never know what
lies in the red rocks, hills, cliffs, with the turquoise skies
overhead. To me these are the quintessential Western colors of our
terrain out here. Happy, happy!

"Looking North, Beachy Head" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting
We
love to travel to foreign lands and see new sights. I never dreamed
I'd ever get to southeastern England, the Kent ("garden of England" --
like England isn't a garden everywhere!). We took part of a day to
drive to Beachy Head, right on the English Channel. It was an exquisite
sight to see, the water, the rocks below, the lighthouse, the cliffs
bright white! I'm so pleased to have had this experience and would urge
everyone who visits the U.K. to go there. Imagine the history!

"Ireland's Rocky Coastline" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting
This
scene is near Dingle, Slea Head, in Ireland. It is a larger Irish
painting than I've done in a while and it took a bit of forever to paint
it -- I went back many, many times to get the shadows and rocks done to
my satisfaction. I'm happy with the results, all it needs now is a
good frame and a good home. Don't forget, St. Patrick's Day is next
month, we're all Irish for a day!
