As we wander through these ancient canyons, we can’t help to wonder what dramas played out right here on this spot eons ago. Was cave-lady Susie jealous because her man flirted with another woman? Was the bead work on her leather dress last year’s style? Did her child disobey and run over by the rattlesnake den? Did they simply have a different version of the same conflicts and irritations we create today?

The weather can change at a moment’s notice – one minute it is dark and stormy and next the sun is peeking through or glaring hot and clear. In one of the unpredictable sunny moments, I started painting on a white panel, trying to quickly capture the essence of the moment. A white panel gives me the option of using a rubber scraping tool to delicately remove wet paint to indicate white branches and other little accents.

These solid looking rock out-croppings provide a perfect growing environment for tree seedlings. As they grow, their roots push deeper and deeper into the cracks, providing a solid anchor for the giant trees they will become someday. Rocks also soak up warmth from the winter sun, providing a warm spot on cold winter days.
