Equine Painting “Scarred But Not Broken” by Painter of the American West

We're all aware of the rotten recipe for how any living creature's spirit gets broken: cruelty, deprivation, and disregard. But some creatures, human and non-human, are molded into something triumphant and magnificent by the very circumstances that shatter the psyche of others. When I painted this beautiful creature, my intent was to communicate the power of Indomitable Spirit; the seed that resides in all of us.

Original Equine Painting "Monastary Horses" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Years ago I attended a retreat at the Benedictine monastery in Snowmass, Colorado in January. It was a beautiful setting and it snowed all weekend. There were 2 sights that printed themselves indelibly on my memory: one was of strong men in brown robes and Wellies pushing the attendees cars out of snowbanks. The other was of the way the stable looked the morning I left, so calm and serene. The statue of Mary reigned over the corral and big, soft flakes of snow fell gently and quietly to the ground.

Original Equine Painting "Time Traveler" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

The horse is an American Western icon. They existed in the Western Hemisphere for millions of years until an extinction approximately 13,000 years ago. They were introduced back onto the Western Hemisphere by the European explorers. The First People embraced the beauty, usefulness, heart and soul of the horse into their lives. When I painted Time Traveler I juxtaposed the beautiful Paint horse with the crimson background of petroglyphs. I painted this with a sense of gratitude for the combined gift of helpfulness, grace, and beauty of the horse.
