Folklore, Raven Painting "Why Raven is Black" by Painter of the American West Nancee Jean Busse

This painting is the 5th painting in a series inspired by Native American legends.
These works bring me back to my illustration roots. I love painting the visual imagery of a    colorful narrative.

Native American legends are colorful and full of life and the natural world.
I paint these uniformly: all are the 36x24 and all are painted on Yupo mounted to gatorboard.  I love indulging my love of detail and "close work.

The legend that inspired this painting is retold  HERE

 36"x24"Acrylic on Yupo

Raven, Contemporary Abstract Bird Painting "Raven Totem 2" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Bussee

This is my second big raven totem painting. I began the first as a way to use up old paint on my palette and scraps of linen that I didn't feel like stretching. I fell in love with allowing myself to paint with more imagination and zero stress. These paintings don't have to look like anything other than what they are. Plus, for me, Raven has powerful magic.

Raven, Bird Fine Art Painting, Wildlife Art "THE SENTINEL" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

I love painting ravens. They are such impressive creatures, and iconic of the American West. To those who ascribe spiritual importance to animals, Raven is a wonderful spirit guide, full of mischief and courage and hutzpah. I used a reference photo that I took about 15 years ago from a hike in Grand Teton National Park to paint this one.

Bird Painting, Fine Art, Raven, Forest “Survivor” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

 FRESH OFF THE EASEL..

After I paint a very large and detailed piece, I need to paint a couple of smaller and faster pieces. That's what this raven painting represents. I wanted to paint this old raven using a palette of reds and oranges. When the painting was complete the title emerged. I think of ravens as clever, mischievous survivors. What better place to find a disgruntled raven than a post-apocalyptic forest?

 16"x20" Acrylic on Canvas Board/Available
