Abstract landscape, "Lavender Sky" by Colorado Mixed Media Abstract Artist Carol Nelson
| Lavender Sky, 8x10, by Carol Nelson |
The value of deconstruction: this painting started out as a collage in these colors. I hated it. I tried and tried to make it better, and it just got worse in my eyes. It laid around my studio for several months. One day I started tearing layers off of it. I thought I couldn't make it worse. I wanted to get down to the wood substrate and reuse it.
Suddenly, I stopped and looked at it again - it was getting better. There was a suggestion of rocks and a tree form that I enhanced. The painting was telling me what to do next! Some of the original materials are still on the surface. I wish I had taken a photo of the work before I started the deconstruction.

Geologic Abstract Painting, Mixed Media Art "Black Gold" by Mixed Media Artist Carol Nelson Fine Art
| "Black Gold" 10x8 inches, by Carol Nelson |
This is a demo painting I did in a recent Geologic Abstract workshop. The black section is Carbon Black acrylic paint, Micaceous Iron Oxide paint, and white.
I covered it with a layer of Liquitex Pouring Medium for a very shiny finish. I'm always excited by the juxtaposition of shiny and dull passages.

Geologic Abstract Demo II, © Carol Nelson Fine Art
This is another demo painting of my geologic abstract series. In workshops, I often paint on watercolor paper, and then mount it on a wood panel. The reason is that in a workshop we are pressed for time. Working on wc paper helps the texture medium dry more quickly.
In the studio, I can texture my substrate (wood panel or canvas) directly, then work on it at a later time when everything is dry.
