This is another plein air piece from our trip to Vermont last month. This, like the last post, is painted near Lincoln, Vermont. I couldn't get over how green it was everywhere; a brighter, bolder green than we have here in Colorado.

My husband and I recently got home from a 3 week trip to Vermont, Maine, and Nova Scotia. The idea for the trip started with an artist friend showing pictures of a trip she had taken to Monhegan Island, Maine in the '70's. For several years a group of us kept saying that we should go there! Well, one day last winter the trip got planned. 16 of us: artists, husbands, family, ended up on Monhegan Island for 4 days in September/October...more about that soon! My husband and I have friends from high school who have Vermont connections. Since Vermont is near Maine, (relatively speaking when you live in Colorado!) we went to Vermont for a week at the beginning of the trip. I'm pretty biased toward the fall colors in Colorado, but Vermont was spectacular. New England in the fall is every thing that they say it is! Each day got more colorful and more beautiful!

I started out with drip trees. After painting the background colors, take a fully loaded brush and press it against the edge of the vertically held canvas, letting the paint run down.
I used two colors of drip trees as you can see.
To achieve the impasto look, I mixed my Golden fluid acrylics with modeling compound to make colorful mixtures of medium. The modeling compound makes the paint color slightly lighter because it is a white opaque medium.
I know it's early summer, but I'm already thinking about my September workshop at DILLMAN'S RESORT, in northern Wisconsin (click here to read about this workshop). The midwest has color equal to New England in the fall.

KM2868 Staning Tall by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (landscape, 20x40, aspen trees, oil painting)
I have been busy painting for my new gallery in New Buffalo Michigan. This is a Colorado fall scene painted in oil on a 40"x20" gallery wrap canvas. Lately, I seem to be drawn to doing the tall vertical paintings. I don't know why it seems I find myself doing a majority of vertical compositions and then go through spells of nothing but horizontals. I would love to know the psychology of what is going on inside that draws me to one or the other!
