"Discover the Miracle of Forgiveness

This was a very emotional process, working on this painting.  It will be donated to an online auction, with all the proceeds going to a very worthy cause.  This painting has a lot of symbolism and is very personal.  Rather than tell you my story of what it means to me, I’d like to let you all begin to write your own story…maybe even through this painting.    

This piece was very different from what I usually create.  It was quite a process and was created with many layers of paint, papers, stencils, inks, charcoal, gesso, pearl mica flakes, and modeling paste.  In the middle of the piece, it is embellished with an antique doorknob ~ again, another symbolism for me.

“Learning, Changing, Growing”, Original Encaustic Painting by Colorado Artist, Donna L. Martin

"Learning, Changing, Growing"

 

 

This is an original encaustic piece that I completed recently.  I had a really strong desire to experiment with encaustics and believe me, this piece and two other small pieces took me the better part of a whole day!  I felt like a crazy person, trying to get beautiful, luminous colors and textures into the layers.  At one point, I melted all of the layers off and started all over again.  The text on this piece reads, "While it may alternately sting or soothe, everyday is different, and there is always something new to learn...".  I truly believe that.  I think all experiences, good or bad, are learning experiences and are put in our paths to get us to where we need to be.  I'm still not where I want to be with this medium, but I am working on it ~ and playing with it has been so much fun.  I hope when the weather cools down a bit more, that I can do a few more of these paintings.   

 

For those who don't know much about encaustic, it is a medium which consists of molten beeswax, resin, and pigments that are fused after application of each layer into a continuous layer and fixed to a support (wood) with heat. This achieves a lustrous enamel appearance.

The word 'encaustic' comes from the Greek and means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. Encaustic paintings can be polished to a high gloss, molded, sculpted, textured and combined with collage materials.

Encaustic is also very durable and an excellent investment. This is due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture. Because of this it will not deteriorate, it will not yellow, and it will not darken.

Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass. If your painting looks dull, or gets dirty it can easily be wiped clean with a soft cloth dampened with water and buffed to a high shine.

 

I mounted this painting on a wooden pallet that I received from Redeemwood.  Redeemwood takes old, used, unwanted pallets and recycles them into the most beautiful canvases that you've ever seen.  I decided on this painting and the two smaller ones, that I would mount them directly on to the canvases and they complimented the paintings beautifully.  You can contact Doug at Redeemwood about his canvases at this email address:

This is a contemporary abstract painting using several different elements to create the rich texture you see in the piece.  It was inspired from all the wildfires we had here in Colorado last year.  It is finished with resin coating, which really make the colors "pop".

"Take Heart Through the Fire"

 

I thought it would be fun to take you through the creation of this piece, from the very beginning to the finished version!

 

 

This is how it started out - a big, white, intimidating canvas.  I added some texture with a cool stencil that I have and some molding paste.  I then started filling in some color with alcohol ink around the divets in the stencil.

 

 

I started adding more color with alcohol inks.  I also had some really cool textured cardboard that I painted with metallic bronze paint and then "rusted" with a rusting solution.  Thanks to Carol Nelson again for teaching me that trick! 

 

 

I also picked up some paper from the shooting range (that is what is sitting on top and bottom of the stenciled part).  It had all these cool holes in it.  Once again, I painted it bronze and then rusted it.  I started attaching in randomly to the piece.

 

 

 

For this middle portion, I painted it with metallic copper paint and then used a solution to patina the paint.  It looks like some kind of regular ol' green paint, but was really quite a process! 

 

 

So after sitting with it for a while, this piece just needed something else, but I couldn't figure out what.  Then lo and behold, I was walking on a local trail and looked down and saw this very cool piece of metal sitting in the dirt alongside the trail.  Seems I've become quite the scavenger!  It was just what I needed to finish this.

 

 

 

Ta Da!!!  All done and ready to go out the door!  It is finished with a beautiful epoxy resin finish (except for the rusted "heart" that I found on the trail), so there is no need for framing.

 

This piece measures 24 X 18 X 1.5, and is available for purchase.
