Abstract Mixed Media Painting "The Laughing Garden" by Intuitive Artist Joan Fullerton

This painting was a class demonstration where I created a grid on top of a non-objective background. With negative painting around flower-like shapes, and the addition of aged pages from a little book called, The Laughing Man, plus spots of copper leaf, I determined the subject to be: flowers delighted enough with their own blooming, to be laughing out loud.

Study With Joan Fullerton in Vancouver, November 14-18

Join us this fall, as we go deep and explore design, composition, and colour mixing with a master. Returning for a second time, Joan Fullerton will share inspiring demonstrations and lectures as she reinforces the fundamentals of painting and then shows you how to build on them. You’ll create a personal lexicon of symbols, learn to hear and trust your intuition, and practice taking risks and moving beyond your comfort zone. You'll begin to recognize and value the visual surprises that show up. Your work will become more expressive as you expand your mark-making repertoire, and your creative confidence will blossom as you gain greater understanding of your individual art process.

We’ll scribble, scratch, glue, paint, embed, spray, remove, blend, glaze, sand, stain, amplify and diminish. You’ll learn to paint with more freedom, cope with frustration, and evolve your art to a new level. Colour theory and design concepts will structure your composing and editing, and you will learn to design intentionally before painting as well as intuitively, during painting.

How to be Intimate With Your Colors & Why | Part 1 With Carol A McIntyre

Which paint brush is your favorite and why? And which group of brushes would you grab if you suddenly needed to evacuate? Like me, you may also have your favorite palette knife or two. Isn’t it interesting how you have tools in your paint box that are like your best friends? Sometimes you may go to great lengths to glue and tape them so that they last longer. Just like a professional tennis player is lost without their specific racket and string, you have your tools that you cannot live without.

When it comes to our favorite substrates — be it paper, board or canvas — you probably have this established as well. It took some trial and error and many paintings to accomplish. It feels good to know your favorites – which to buy, which to ignore.

The  other “tool” that is in your cache is one that I have noticed gets overlooked too often. I am referring to that other bunch of stuff in your painter’s box — your tubes of paint! Sure, you have a few favorite colors, but do you know why they are your favorites or do you just use them because it is a habit? I am always surprised to learn that many painters do not know their colors intimately.

If I picked up a tube out of your box and asked you, “What are the properties of this color, would you be able to tell me?”

My suspicion is that your tubes of paint are feeling neglected — poor things — and that they are not as intimately known as your brushes or substrates. However, they are just as important. It is similar to a cook knowing her knives, spatulas, pans, cooking surface, etc., and not knowing her ingredients. Yikes, I am not sure I would want to eat from that kitchen, would you?

How do You Get to Know Your Colors Well?

Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art "Lost and Found" by Contemporary Realism Artist Carol A. McIntyre

FRESH OFF THE EASEL....

This painting began as a painting about water and water lilies. Along the way, that inspiration waned. However, can you see the water behind the strokes of thick paint? Can you feel the sensation of water toward the bottom of the painting?

"Lost and Found," evolved into my many experiences as a child walking through the woods and peering around weeping willow tree branches. What do you see and feel? Do you enjoy the mystery? If so, where does it take you?

Art of the Carolinas

I can't believe that Art of the Carolinas is a little more than a month away.  Especially if you live on the East coast, you HAVE to check this out.  Click here for general information, and click here for information on the workshops I'll be teaching.

One of my workshops is sold out already, so don't miss out.  Imagine, 100's of workshops, and 1000's of artists all in one hotel in Raleigh, NC.

Think of the people you'll meet, the thrill of just hanging out with more like-minded artists than you've ever seen. If you only do one art event for the year, this is the one! It's going to be such a blast.
