"Irish Hills" mixed media abstract landscape by Carol Nelson

This little 6x6 abstracted landscape started out as one of my "effortless abstracts" done with a foam plate.  They usually don't turn out this "landscapy".
I was pleased with the swirled look of the sky in shades of blue and white.

"Gemstone 17" mixed media abstract green landscape by Carol Nelson

This is for the lovers of green.  It doesn't show up a lot in my work, but I like it.  This was a demo painting I did for a class in Littleton last week.

Here, the compliment (red-orange) is the highlight on a predominantly green painting.  Usually for me, it's the other way around.

This is another in my tree series featuring various collage elements.  Careful inspection reveals lace paper, corrugated paper, and watercolor paper all covered securely with crystal clear epoxy resin.

"Summer Love" mixed media tree painting by Carol Nelson

This is the result of my playing around with crackle paste.  I started this painting last week in my workshop in North Carolina.  This week I've been playing with the colors.

These warm tones of coral, violet, and turquoise remind me of summer memories.  Maybe this palette is an escape from the drab winter palette that is finally beginning to brighten up in Colorado.

Gemstone 12B - abstract landscape by mixed media artist Carol Nelson

Gemstone 12B

This is another experiment with enlarging a 6x6 inch painting into a larger format, 12x12 inches in this case.  The canvas is very heavily textured, and I also experimented in using a Tombo water soluable pen for the black lines.

When I spray the lines with water, they spread out, giving a fuzzy look that I like.  I then have to go over the lines with an India ink pen to deepen the color.

You may think you're seeing double.  You are.  I used the small 6x6 Gemstone 14, which was an "effortless abstract" I did for my workshop in Texas (Wenmohs Ranch) last week, as a template for a larger painting.

I've been telling my students that doing small paintings is like doing a sketch or workup for a larger work, so thought I had better practice what I preach and show you an example.

Sometimes smaller work does not enlarge well.  The charm of a small gem of a painting will not translate into a larger format.  I think the key is to USE the smaller image, but not to be a slave to it.  If you need to modify the larger painting by adding more detail, then do it.

This Gemstone Series painting has the full palette of jewel tones.  This one turned out to have a definite "landscape look."
