This is a small study painted prior to a larger piece. I photographed this elk calf up in Yellowstone on the Madison River. This calf and 4 others were sunning themselves on a small island in the river, while only one cow grazed on the opposite bank. A few miles up the road, Grady and I saw a large herd of cows. I theorized that one cow stayed back to watch over the sleeping calves while the rest of the herd moved to a meadow with better grazing opportunity.
